Wayfinding: Step One

After brainstorming and present multiple ideas, our group has finally settled on one "problem" for this project. Our activity to solve will be locating the Art and Architecture Library from the front doors of the Spencer Art Museum. This weekend we plan on filming KU students, who have never been to the library, on their search through the Spencer.

Project Reflections:

Type – To be honest, I really didn’t think that something such as typography was an art. Having read about it now, and talking about it in class, I find it very interesting. I learned, from the article, the terminology for different font characteristics, such as the serif. I now consider the type used in posters, book and websites.
Photography – The two readings on photography were really interesting. I really enjoyed the later of the two, which talked about photography being central to our culture and essential to the distribution of information about our world. These topics are really intriguing to me and I support them fully. I love photography, its concept, variety and technique. I also found interesting the counter arguments that the camera is an “objective machine” and captures images without the valued use of an artist behind the photo. Personally, I think this view is ignorant and uninformed, but I can see how photography is, to some, an unappreciated form of art.

Project Reflections:
Word Designs (color and black & white) – I really enjoyed the cutting and pasting of letters/words for the b&w portion of this project. In recreating my original designs in Illustrator taught me a lot within the program. I feel a lot more confident in my skills with the software after completing this portion of the assignment. Putting the designs in color was, at first, a challenge for I have never thought about color in such a way. I learned that yellows and oranges should never be used in a background because they have too strong a hue and that they should be used in moderation even within foreground objects. Through the many in-class critiques I learned the importance of the use of space and framing of a composition. Using the entire frame is esthetically important.
Group, On Site Word – I never thought that cardboard was such a useful material. You can build anything out of cardboard! It’s cheap, easy to work with and can be structurally sounds and sturdy. The actually construction of the letters was very involved and then the dressing of the letters (covering with paper) proved to be just as time consuming. When photographing the letters on site, I learned to trouble shoot windy conditions and experimented with different angles and frames to convey the word.
Team Dynamic – Our group worked great together! Everyone showed the same amount of initiative and willingness to meet outside of class. The workload was distributed every evenly and I never felt that one person was slacking or that someone was taking on more than needed. Despite having creative disagreements, as there is in any group of thinking minds, we worked through differences and found common ground to work with and I think everyone was satisfied with every step throughout our group’s progress. We all worked really well together and the cost of materials was split fairly and evenly.

Final Pictures/Locations:

Final 9 Color Designs:

hmm... well anyone know how I can upload my images? I've tried with Illustrator files and pdf's...

INTENSE Locations:

our first thought was to place our word in nature near Potter Lake somewhere...
other ideas included places that were intense, such as solar panels for intense solar energy.
